What a conundrum. Wear a helmet for safety. Not wear a helmet for utter pleasure.
After 25+ years of Canadian law requiring helmets in '97 I rode for the first time in many many years without a helmet at Sturgis.
Can't say that I did not enjoy the absence of the weight and the nuisance of looking after the hat.
But on our third day there, one of our party (too much beer) fell - fortunately at low speed- and the woman riding with him took a nasty fall and banging - (short pants, bikini top and fly really didn't give her any protection)
So we who affect to love our steeds have a conundrum. Safety - (and I do not want to start a debate about safety issues) or Pleasure.
Guess it is a personal choice - in recent years I have ridden with and without - Sturgis without is fun - but whizzing down the roads at legal speed limits plus with more trucks and cages than anyone could be comfortable around is a different matter -
I test rode a Beemer last summer at Sturgis - helmets were manditory. Didn't mind - but was happy to take the hat off and ride the canyon with my ball cap
I have never personally resolved the helmet issue - and I guess likely I never will
Appears it is a preference thing - and in a lucky few locations a personal choice issue
Keep the rubber side down
